Storage Unit Padlocks

Choosing and Maintaining Padlocks

Choosing a good lock is an important part of renting a self-storage unit. The right lock should fit your unit’s locking mechanism properly, be designed for outdoor or storage use, and be easy for you to operate.

At Westore Mini Storage, we recommend choosing a quality lock that fits the storage unit door correctly and checking it periodically to make sure it continues to operate smoothly.

Choosing a Storage Unit Lock

Several types of locks are commonly used for self-storage, including keyed padlocks, combination locks and disc-style locks.

Before purchasing a lock, make sure it is compatible with the locking mechanism on your storage unit. A lock that doesn’t fit correctly may be difficult to use or may not close properly.

If you’re unsure what type or size of lock to purchase, ask our staff before buying one.

Keyed or Combination Lock?

Both keyed and combination locks can be convenient depending on your preference.

A keyed lock requires you to keep track of the key, while a combination lock eliminates the need for a key but requires you to remember the combination.

Whichever type you choose, select a quality lock intended for the conditions where it will be used.

Keep Your Lock Clean

Outdoor locks are exposed to dust, dirt, moisture and changing weather conditions. Over time, debris can make a lock more difficult to operate.

Check your lock periodically and keep the exterior and locking mechanism clean. If the lock becomes difficult to open or close, follow the lock manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance recommendations.

Lubricate According to the Manufacturer’s Instructions

Different locks may require different types of maintenance. Rather than automatically applying oil, graphite or another lubricant, check the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular lock.

Using the recommended product can help keep the locking mechanism operating properly without introducing a lubricant that isn’t appropriate for that lock.

Don’t Force a Difficult Lock

If your lock suddenly becomes difficult to open, don’t force the key or locking mechanism. Check for dirt or damage and make sure you’re using the correct key or combination.

If the lock appears damaged or no longer operates reliably, replacement may be the better option.

Protect Your Key or Combination

Keep spare keys and combinations in a secure location. If you allow someone else access to your storage unit, make sure you understand who has a key or knows the combination.

If a key is lost or you believe an unauthorized person may have access to your lock, consider replacing it.

Need Help Choosing a Lock?

If you’re renting a storage unit at Westore Mini Storage and aren’t sure which lock will fit your unit, ask our staff. We can help you determine what type of lock works with the unit’s locking mechanism.

A quality lock, used correctly and maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, is one part of keeping your storage unit properly closed and accessible when you need it.
